The New System Changing Streets and Beaches
Cyprus is taking an important step in addressing cigarette butt pollution, with the official licensing of the first Collective System for the management of tobacco product filters.
The company CPC Rethink Filters Ltd received, on 04/05/2026, a six-year license from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, based on the Waste Regulations (K.D.P. 53/2024).
This means that for the first time in Cyprus there is an official body that undertakes the organized management of cigarette butts at a national level.
The problem everyone sees but few understand
Cigarette butts are among the most common forms of litter on streets and beaches, but also among the most toxic.
According to data taken into account within the framework of the new system:
- many smokers do not even consider them as “waste”
- they end up everywhere in the environment without control
- they seriously affect cities, beaches and seas
And most concerning: their filter contains plastic that does not easily decompose.
What is changing now in Cyprus
The new system aims to change the approach:
- from uncontrolled disposal
- to organized collection and producer responsibility
The goal is:
- fewer cigarette butts in the environment
- compliance with European targets
- change in mindset and behavior from smokers
The next steps
CPC is already planning:
- dedicated infrastructure in public spaces
- a large awareness and information campaign for 2 years
- additional actions to change smokers’ behavior
Cyprus is entering a new era of cigarette butt management, with the goal of a cleaner environment and less environmental pollution.
When it succeeds, it will change the way we see the “small waste” that causes the biggest damage.
